All you need to know about breast augmentation procedures
1. Preparation
Before undergoing breast augmentation, you will need to prepare your bo
dy for the procedure. You will be asked to make simple lifestyle changes like stop smoking and avoid certain medicines that may increase bleeding. You may also be asked for a blood test.
Before the surgery make possible arrangements at home so that you may take a break from your daily work for a few days. If your surgery is being performed on an outpatient basis, you may need someone by your side to take you back home.
2. Anesthesia
Before starting the procedure, your doctor will administer general anesthesia. In some cases, your doctor may suggest intravenous sedation to reduce any pain during the process.
3. Incision
Breast augmentation surgery may have different places for incision depending on the type of implant. Usually, there are five types of incisions your doctor may choose to make. The type of incision will be discussed with you before the procedure. An incision made below the breast is known as inframammary incision.
Periareolar or an incision made along the border of the breasts may also be done for placing implants. In some cases, an incision is made in the armpit from which the implants are placed. Transumbilical and transabdominal incisions are also made in some patients from which the implants are tunneled to the desired place.
4. Inserting the implant
As soon as the incision is made your surgeon will place the breast implant. There are two ways to successfully place the implants.
A submuscular placement involves inserting the implants under the pectoral muscle. A sub glandular placement involves inserting the implants over the pectoral muscles.
5. Closing of incision
Once the implants are placed, the incision is closed with skin adhesives or sutures. There can be scars on the skins that marks the incision, but it will fade over time. Post breast augmentation you may resume your normal life in 7-9 days.
Besides the above breast augmentation procedures, you may choose non-implant techniques such as liposuction where fat cells are extracted from other parts of the body and is injected over the breasts.
Autologous fat grafting may also be used for correction of deformities and asymmetry of the breasts. Some doctors may also use botox post breast augmentation for more desirable results.
